How to Turn Comments into Email Optins

Comment Optin ScreenshotI’ve always been told that an internet marketer’s biggest asset is his list. And I will tell you that, as a blogger, you should be working on ways to not only increase your email list, but also to keep people on your list.

And with a headline like that, you’re probably expecting some shady method of automatically subscribing people to your email list when they comment on your website.

But, I’d like to show you an easy, quick, and most importantly legit way to subscribe your website visitors to your email list when they comment.

The beauty of WordPress is that there is usually a plugin when you need a bit of functionality added to your website, and this was no exception. But after looking through several options, Aweber Comment Optin and Mailchimp Comment Optin stood on top for two reasons:

  1. They are both free
  2. They are easy to configure and don’t have a ton of options

Initial Setup

At Art of Blog, we use Aweber for email list management. Therefore, my experience with these plugins is limited to the Aweber Comment Optin plugin. That being said, both plugins were created by Thomas Griffin and appear to work similarly.

On this screen, all you will need to do is click the “Click Here to Get Your Authorization Token” button, login to your Aweber account, and copy the authorization token.

After you do that, you will be presented with a screen that looks like this:

As you can see, this plugin has a very clean options interface and it shouldn’t be hard for you to get the plugin going. Once you’re logged in, you just need to select which list you want to add the commenters to, and you should be good to go.

I advise you to keep the “Display the checkbox after the comment form” option checked. We always want to make it optional for visitors to our websites to sign up to our lists… Not automatic or mandatory.

Questions or Comments?

If you have any questions about how to implement/customize this plugin, please leave a comment below. As always, I’m interested in your experience with this plugin and would like to hear your opinions below :)
