quick question. how does the 50GB backup space on Dreamhost differ from the “unlimited storage” that all the site offer?

Good question… It’s a personal backup, for stuff that’s not related to your website.

Think of it as a cloud storage drive…. just like a box.net account. Here is some more information from DreamHost http://goo.gl/yrosk

Hey Wilson your site doesn’t load for me… got issues, or is it my ISP?

To clarify what you said, ALL “unlimited” hosting packages are NOT unlimited. Try hitting 40GB on any of them, and see how fast they’ll warn and then close your account. The 40GB is a magic number, because it is usually the size at which backup jobs start failing.

The trick with “unlimited” is, as you said, the data stored has to be website content, everything else – including your email – is considered “data warehousing”, or a similar term, and is therefore a violation of the TOS.

The “unlimited” packages not allowing data warehousing, together with a TOS that allows a host to close down you account based on their own courtesy, make a red light go on each time I see such an offer.

I’m looking for a quality WP host that offers 24/7 live, human support. I’ve tried DreamHost, but the best they can do is a call-back plan, for which they charge extra. That can leave you in the middle of a problem for a long time. I’ve also tried GoDaddy, which is not on your list, and while there’s some hold time, you can actually speak to someone at any time, and often they will stay on the line with you while you fix the problem (if the fix is fairly short). But, since GoDaddy isn’t on your list, I wonder if there’s a problem there?

What companies would you recommend as a quality WP host with 24/7 live human support?

Hostgator has been my personal choice for a web hosting company for a few years now. From time to time I’ve had to call tech support… I’ve always spoken to a live person, with wait times being minimal. I’m pretty sure that customer service and tech support is housed in Texas.

I’ve used GoDaddy years ago… and had issues with tech support. I haven’t used them since.

Hey,

Surpass Hosting, a subsidiary of HostDime, would be my suggestion. They got real technicians in the live chat 24/7, and 3 out of 4 times they were able to fix issues while I chatted with them. Also nice is, their support center is located within the server farm in Orlando, so they can actually walk to your server, if they have to. I started using them in 2004 as a reseller, since then we have moved to our own dedicated server located in their data center as well.
